The history of the Canadian maple leaf emblem goes back to the early 1700s when it was used by the French Canadians along the Saint Lawrence River. In the 1830s, Jacques Viger, the first mayor of Montreal, described the maple as "the king of our forest... the symbol of the Canadian people."
