When Irish Eyes Are Smiling...

They may be wearing a cockade too! Green cockades were worn by Irish soldiers on both sides of the Civil War as a mark of Irish nationalism and pride.

Cockades were often used in history to express a political sentiment. As the Irish fought for their freedom through the centuries, badges showing their solidarity included harps, shamrocks, and the color green. In the 1800s, the Fenian Brotherhood was started to prepare Irish troops to combat the British for their freedom. Many Fenian members were in the American armies on both sides of the Civil War.
